IS SUPERMAN DEAD?

It all started when when Jerry Siegel (writer) and Joe Shuster (art) sold the character to DC Comics in 1938.

ORIGIN STORY

Born on the doomed planet Krypton, Superman (aka Kal-El) was sent to Earth by his birth parents - moments before their planet was destroyed. His spacecraft crash-landed in rural Kansas, Kal-El was found by local farmers Johnathan and Martha Kent who took the orphaned child in and named him Clark. As he grew up in rural Smallville, Clark discovered that he possessed god-like powers - a result of his Kryptonian biology absorbing solar radiation from Earth's yellow sun. Following school, Clark decided to use his powers to protect mankind. Moving to Metropolis, he works as a journalist for the city's premiere newspaper, The Daily Planet. While protecting Earth, the hero has faced-off against numerous threats, including Brainiac, Doomsday, and General Zod - but no foe is as iconic or dangerous as billionaire genius, Lex Luthor.

THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN

DC Comics released a Superman Title named "Death Of Superman" in 1992, in which Superman actually tragically dies trying to save Earth from Doomsday attack. It wasn't a gimmick and he actually died in the comics. DC wanted to check how the DC universe would function with out their Blue super hero.

While the villain, Doomsday, was something of a daemon ex machina, his climactic fight with Superman was afforded plenty of visual weight in the series. The third-to-last comic in the arc had only three panels on each page; the second-to-last, only two. The final issue, Superman #75, was famously composed of only full-page splash panels.

And just like in comics, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had him go down at the hands of that big guy covered in bone protuberances, Doomsday.

Superman comics wasn't doing pretty good sales wise in the early 90's, so DC thought of getting rid of Superman first and try and bring back some one who would have a modern feel and carry the franchise as Marvel was pretty big and growing and a stiff competition as they had characters like iron man.
